Activities that are Leaving a Positive Legacy

Two Wheels, One Love Day of Service and Celebration

January 22 - 9:15am (Meet at PL HQ) to 3:30pm (Returning to port)

In loving memory of Woody Zalman and in partnership with Oracabessa Foundation, Positive Legacy will host a meaningful day of service, intercultural exchange, music and celebration on Sunday January 22. We will start our day at the Eden Park BMX Track in Saint Mary, which was built by Oracabessa in 2012. There are few things Jamaican youth (or children anywhere for that matter) love more than bicycles. The Oracabessa Foundation is channeling this enthusiasm for cycling into a community program called Two Wheels, One Love, with a curriculum that teaches children life skills through sports achievement.

After a short exhibition from the Two Wheels students we will get our hands dirty with track improvements and beautification. Next we will travel a short distance to a beautiful beach, where we will enjoy a community jam by Jam Cruise musicians: Love Canon, Katelyn and Laurie Shook, Lebo and Friends featuring Todd Stoops, Steve Kimock, Roosevelt Collier, Reed Mathis, Vinnie Amico, Matt Butler, and new friends, while sharing food and dance with our community partners and the children and families of Two Wheels, One Love.

If you’d like to attend the Day of Service & Celebration in Jamaica, tickets can be purchased for $75. The ticket price will cover the cost of supplies needed for the BMX track improvements and beautification, as well as lunch and transportation. There will be a limited number of tickets available, therefore we recommend getting yours ASAP. This event is rain or shine and tickets are nonrefundable. Tickets on sale HERE!

More Ways to Get Involved

Two Wheels, One Love Fundraiser

Help a child in Jamaica reach their full potential! This program is in loving memory of Woody Zalman, who was tragically taken from us upon his return home from his 4th Jam Cruise in 2016. With your help, the Two Wheels, One Love program helps foster a learning environment for over 200 children from 5 schools across Jamaica. By donating to the foundation, educators are able to reach young children through their love of biking, creating an even bigger opportunity to teach much broader lessons across the board.

Want to get more involved with Positive Legacy and help make an impact? Give two hours of your time while on Jam Cruise and receive a t-shirt and lots of love. Your efforts and energy will help immensely. For more information and to get signed up, send an email to volunteer@positivelegacy.com.

Laptop Donation Drive

Do you have a laptop you’d like to donate to a needy school in one of the communities we visit? Computers are a luxury that few schools in the Caribbean can provide to their students. Here’s a chance for music fans to Leave a Positive Legacy and make a difference in the lives of others. If you have a used laptop you would like to donate for future humanitarian efforts, please e-mail Matt at mwhildin@gmail.com to discuss your computer’s specifications and the minimum system requirements.

Offsetting Our Carbon Footprint

Positive Legacy and Trees, Water & People makes it easy to travel responsibly by offsetting the emissions for Jam Cruise 15. Your $15 donation will not only help to reduce greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, but will also provide tangible support to families in Central America with more trees for their communities and cleaner, more efficient cook-stoves. If you want to make a donation, simply add a Carbon Offset to your reservation for Jam Cruise.

Recap On Last Years JC14 Positive Legacy Initiatives

Deer Dance Festival

Thanks to a $13,750 grant from Positive Legacy, the 4-day Deer Dance Festival was performed in Santa Cruz, Belize the from Jan 6-10th! This provided education and technology to Maya teens in order to integrate students in the video production of a documentary about Maya heritage and the traditional practice of the Deer Dance. Check out a trailer for the Maya Deer Dance, a Cool Anthropology and Daniel Velazquez documentary.

Drums Not Guns

Our goal for this is to support nonviolence and self-empowerment among at-risk youths in the area. A $1,000 grant to Drums Not Guns in Punta Gorda, Belize helped to host an event where youth could participate in drum circles, dancing, poetry and more. In the spirit of ‘One World United through Music’, Master Kriol Drummer Emmet Young brought his drumming students to the Village of Santa Cruz on Jan 8th to perform for school children. This was a unique experience where cultures were exchanged and music created a melting pot that joined everyone together.

Educational Tropical Garden

Giving back with art! $2,500 was provided for the installation of an Educational Tropical Garden and an environmentally conscious mural representing biodiversity in Memorial Park, Belize City. The mural was painted on January 8th and the garden will be installed on January 26th with the help of the local community partners.
